Brewing the Perfect Cup: Mastering Coffee in the Wilderness
Camping mornings are a special time, filled with the crisp scent of nature, the soothing sounds of the wilderness, and the promise of adventure…but first, we make coffee.
For us coffee lovers, there's an added layer of magic the moment the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the campsite.
In this post, we'll guide you through a camping morning routine centered around the art of making coffee in the great outdoors.
From classic campfire brews to modern portable coffee makers, we'll explore a variety of methods to ensure your camping mornings start with a perfect cup of joe.
Coffee Basics:
Start with some good quality whole coffee beans*.
2. Always grind* your beans fresh just before you are ready to brew for best tasting coffee.
When camping, I like to use a manual grinder because it does not need to be recharged or plugged in.
A well made and cared for coffee grinder will last you a long time.
But…they do make some nice Rechargeable Grinders* that make grinding up your coffee beans pretty fast and effortless.
3. Use clean filtered water for best tasting results!
We LOVE our Berkey Water Filter* and use it in our RV while camping as well as at home.
If you’re backpacking you need a small compact water filter like: Katadyn Hiker Pro Transparent Water Filter*
Making your coffee with purified water is essential for great tasting coffee.
The Campfire Classic: Cowboy Coffee
Nothing beats the rustic charm of making coffee over an open flame. This method is great for making coffee, especially for large groups. To brew cowboy coffee, follow these easy steps:
Ingredients: Coarsely ground coffee, water, and a campfire.
Method: Boil water in a Large Pot* or a Kettle* over the campfire. Add coffee grounds directly into the boiling water and stir. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes, then remove it from the fire and let the grounds settle. Slowly pour or ladle the coffee into your mug, avoiding the grounds at the bottom.

Portable Coffee Makers: A Modern Twist
Modern campers have the advantage of portable coffee makers that deliver convenience without sacrificing quality. Here are a few popular options:
AeroPress*
Ingredients: Ground coffee, water.
Method: Boil water using a small camp stove like a Jet Boil* or if you have electricity at your RV campsite, use a fast Electric Kettle* and save your fuel.
Place a filter* in the AeroPress cap and assemble it. Add coffee grounds, pour in hot water, and stir. Attach the plunger and slowly press down, extracting a smooth, rich coffee. Cleanup is a breeze with this compact and eco-friendly option.
Pour-Over Dripper*
Ingredients: Coffee filters, ground coffee, water.
Method: Place the pour-over dripper on top of your favorite mug and insert a filter. Add coffee grounds, then pour hot water over the grounds in a slow, steady stream. The coffee drips into your mug below, resulting in a clean and flavorful brew.
This is my favorite method when making coffee for 2-4 people.
Ingredients: Coarsely ground coffee, hot water.
Method: Heat water on your camp stove or fire. Add coffee grounds to the French press and pour in hot water. Stir and place the lid on with the plunger up. After a few minutes of steeping, press down the plunger slowly to separate the grounds. Pour your rich, aromatic coffee into your favorite campsite mug.
Pre-made options: Coffee Bags and Instant Coffee
For the utmost convenience, like when backpacking, consider pre-made options like coffee bags or instant coffee. These are perfect for minimalists or campers on the move:
Coffee Bag Singles*: Similar to tea bags, coffee bags contain pre-ground coffee in a filter bag. Simply steep in hot water like you would tea and enjoy.
A camping morning routine built around the art of making coffee is a simple pleasure that elevates your outdoor experience.
Whether you opt for the traditional cowboy coffee, embrace the modern convenience of portable coffee makers, or prefer pre-made options, the choice is yours.
So, as the sun rises over your campsite, savor that first sip of coffee, knowing that you've perfected the art of brewing bliss in the great outdoors. Happy camping and caffeinating!
